DRAWING TOPOGRAPHIES: inteRNAL & EXTERNAL
JANUARY 2024 I BEGAN A ROYAL DRAWING SCHOOL course; my friend DORRY spikes WENT THERE AND TOLD ME ABOUT IT. IT’S AN ONLINE CLASS, AND THE DESCRIPTION ON THE RDS WEBSITE IS THIS:
HIS course explores the very nature and form our lives take by reflecting on how we internalise our experience of the world, and how this can be contained within our drawings. The act of image making provides us with space to explore multiple themes, locations, spaces and times together, distilled through the creative process into a vision of experience. We will work sequentially, combining our fragmented experiences as a journey, examine the fixed position and first-person view, as well as experiment with multiple viewpoints to distil a sense of place and time. To inform and enrich our responses, we will learn about the techniques of psychogeography, mapping, stream-of-consciousness, theories of psychoanalysis and discuss surrealism’s legacy in the work of contemporary international artists such as Dorethea Tanning, Grayson Perry, John Woseley, Frida Kahlo, William Kentridge and Ken Kiff. The tutor will present pictorial frameworks (ways of organising imagery) and weekly themes that will be used as the scaffolding for your observations, memories and imagination. This will enable you to experiment with distilling your interests into ambitious, often complex works, converting everyday realities into revealing visions that reflect our inner state of being. All sessions are structured and provide both group and individual support, whether you are new to drawing or a practicing professional.
Please note this course has an emphasis on the use of imagination and memory which can at times elicit difficult feelings for some.
iT’S SO NICE HOW THEY PHRASE IT? WOW, A DREAM. I WAS ON THE WAITING LIST AND ONE DAY BEFORE THE COURSE STARTED THEY SAID – QUICK! BOOK! A PLACE HAS COME UP! – SO I DID! so happy!
OVER 10 WEEKS WE COVERED LOADSA STUFF THANKS TO excellent tutor GERAINT ross evans & PRETTY PARTICIPANTS. here are some of the small things I MADE, I HAD TO STICK TO THE 3HR SESSIONS PER WEEK WE HAD COS OF OTHER COMMITMENTS (TENDING TO THESIS + HEAP READING, TEACHING, ETC.)…

i also made a small 21-page diary to go with the practical works.
i tied everything together in this hidden drawing which was also the last artwork, creased into a folder and secured with a paperclip. now i can think more visually-literately about psychogoegraphy-related matters, woo. thank you royal drawing school!
